What is the HiSET and How to Prepare for It
The HiSET® exam is the official high school equivalency test in Maine, replacing the GED® in 2014. Earning the HiSET shows that you have the same knowledge and skills as a high school graduate. This important step can open doors to better job opportunities, college programs, and personal goals.
Why Choose the HiSET?
For many adults, finishing high school may have felt out of reach. The HiSET provides a second chance. It gives you the opportunity to prove your academic skills and receive a credential with the same legal standing as a high school diploma. Passing the HiSET can change your life by increasing your confidence, career options, and future possibilities.
What Does the HiSET Include?
The exam has five subject tests:
-
Language Arts – Reading
-
Language Arts – Writing
-
Mathematics
-
Science
-
Social Studies
You can take the HiSET on paper or on computer, depending on your preference. Most students begin with placement tests in reading and math. From there, Adult Education programs help you prepare through classes, tutoring, and practice exams. Once you’re ready, you’ll complete the five official HiSET exams.
The Preparation Process
Every learner’s journey is different, but the process usually follows these steps:
-
Placement Assessments – to identify strengths and areas that need improvement.
-
Skill Development – through classwork, studying, and tutoring.
-
Pre-Tests – practice exams to make sure you are ready.
-
Official HiSET Exams – five tests that lead to your diploma equivalency.
Success Story
Many students have walked this path and achieved their goals. One graduate shared:
“When I left school at 15, I thought my dream of earning a diploma was out of reach. Years later, I decided it was time to take control of my future. With the help of Adult Education classes and tutoring, I passed my exams and earned my diploma. Now I know: It’s never too late to achieve your dreams.”
