Beginner Book Binding

This class introduces the vocabulary of the book, the tools and materials needed for making beginner books. On the first evening we will hand decorate our papers, using different mark-making tools in calligraphic ways. The second night we will stitch two pamphlet books, binding them with soft and hard covers. Finally we will create pocket accordion books and begin to consider how to fill them. A materials fee of $20 payable to the instructor is due on the first night. Tools will also be provided.

Using expressive mark-making and bold color choices, we will work from a selection of reference photos from our beautiful state of Maine. This all-levels class will explore techniques for illustrative ink drawing with ‘dip pens’, and layering and mixing vibrant and organic hues with watercolor. Students will leave with their own unique composition of a bouquet - which could make a wonderful handmade holiday gift.
