This class introduces the vocabulary of the book, the tools and materials needed for making beginner books. On the first evening we will hand decorate our papers, using different mark-making tools in calligraphic ways. The second night we will stitch two pamphlet books, binding them with soft and hard covers. Finally we will create pocket accordion books and begin to consider how to fill them. A materials fee of $20 payable to the instructor is due on the first night. Tools will also be provided.

This all-levels class integrates pen and ink techniques with watercolor. Students will learn principles of illustration flora and fauna, focusing on one specimen each week. Each week will focus on a new subject, such as a wildflower or fish, with subjects gradually increasing in complexity. At the end of the course, students will have gained techniques for painting and drawing in their own unique style. Explore your creativity through layering paper, paint, trimmings and other found objects in this hands-on collage class. Learn composition, texture, and basic mixed media techniques to create a unique, Christmas tree-themed art canvas to keep or to give as a gift. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided! *Registration deadline is 11/5.

In this class, we will follow step by step instructions to create a multi-layered card. We will use one stamp several times to paper piece a stunning image. We will also make a gift card holder to prepare for the holidays. Precut kits and envelopes are provided. Participants need a pair of scissors and colored pencils or markers.

When the top is removed, the inside pops open and reveals pockets to tuck in a note or gift card, and colorful decorations. We will also make a mini gable box perfect for that small gift. Learn to draw what you see. If you can write you can draw! It is more a matter of learning to see and recognize shapes and proportions. We will spend three weeks rapidly improving our drawing and observation skills through a series of exercises and projects. In order to get the greatest benefit from the class, it is advised that you complete the short daily drawing challenge. Materials list will be provided by the instructor.

No Prior painting experience is necessary; Shirley welcomes beginners with open arms. Learn how to transfer hand-drawn imagery onto clay using monoprinting techniques with slip and underglaze. Explore layering, line work, and expressive surface design. Bring leather-hard pots if you’d like, or use provided slabs. All materials included; $20 materials fee payable to the instructor. No experience necessary.
