Save the Date: Adult Education Graduation – May 28
RSU 19 Adult Education will be celebrating student success at this year’s graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Nokomis Regional High.
At this time, 25 students have completed their high school diploma or HiSET (formerly known as the GED), with additional graduates expected in the coming weeks.
Family members, friends, and community members are welcome to attend and recognize the hard work and dedication of our graduates.
We look forward to celebrating this important milestone with our students and community.
Adult Education: More Than Classes -- A Path Forward
Adult education is often misunderstood. Many people assume it’s only for earning a high school diploma or that it’s a “last resort.” In reality, adult education is a flexible, supportive pathway designed to help adults move forward — academically, professionally, and personally — no matter where they’re starting from.
At RSU 19 Adult Education, we work with adults who are changing careers, returning to education after time away, or looking to advance in their current jobs. We also regularly hear from parents and grandparents who want to help a loved one find a better path. Adult education exists for both — the individual ready to take the step and the family member offering encouragement and support.
Our program offers multiple ways to reach your goals. For those who did not finish high school, we provide support to earn a high school diploma or prepare for the HiSET (formerly known as the GED). These programs are designed for adults, with flexible scheduling, individualized instruction, and guidance along the way — not a one-size-fits-all classroom.
Adult education is also about workforce training and career advancement. We offer affordable workforce training and professional development courses, many of which are available online and self-paced. These options allow working adults to build new skills, earn certificates, and explore new career opportunities in fields such as business, healthcare, technology, and finance — without putting life on hold.
What truly sets adult education apart is the support. Adults don’t just sign up for a class and figure it out alone. We help individuals understand their options, set realistic goals, and choose the right next step — whether that’s finishing a diploma, preparing for college, or gaining workforce skills to move up or change direction.
Adult education also serves the broader community. When adults gain education and confidence, families benefit, workplaces grow stronger, and local communities thrive. That’s why adult education is not just about classes — it’s about opportunity, stability, and forward momentum.
If you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay. Many people come to us with questions, not plans. We’re here to help you — or someone you care about — figure out the right path forward.
Not sure where to begin? We can help. Call our office to get started and learn how RSU 19 Adult Education can support your next step.
RSU 19 Adult Education Encourages Community to Reignite the Path to Graduation
Newport — For many families, there is a student they care deeply about who left high school before earning a diploma. Life happens. Circumstances change. And sometimes, the path to graduation gets delayed. RSU 19 Adult Education wants families to know that it is never too late to start again.
RSU 19 Adult Education offers supportive, flexible programs designed to help students return to school, earn their high school diploma, or complete their HiSET (high school equivalency). Whether a student left school recently or years ago, adult education provides a fresh start in a respectful, adult-focused learning environment.
What sets RSU 19 Adult Education apart is the individualized support built into the program. Students work at their own pace in learning labs, receive one-on-one instruction, and have access to experienced teachers who understand that every learner’s journey is different. For many students, this personalized approach makes all the difference in building confidence and momentum toward graduation.
In addition to diploma and HiSET preparation, RSU 19 Adult Education places a strong emphasis on college and career readiness. Students receive academic advising, assistance with college planning, and guidance to help them think beyond graduation and take the next step toward college, training, or a career path that fits their goals.
An important part of this preparation is Empower U, a new orientation and success course beginning next Tuesday. Empower U is designed to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond, including time management, study strategies, communication skills, and goal setting. The course helps students build a strong foundation so they are not just enrolled, but truly prepared to succeed.
Families often play a key role in encouraging students to take that first step back. RSU 19 Adult Education welcomes parents and grandparents to reach out on behalf of their students, ask questions, and learn more about the options available.
Enrollment is open now. To learn more about diploma completion, HiSET preparation, college readiness, or the upcoming Empower U class, call RSU 19 Adult Education at 207-368-3290. A new beginning could be just one phone call away.

Know Someone Who Never Finished High School? RSU 19 Adult Education Can Help
Newport, ME – Many adults in our community never had the chance to finish high school. For some, life has simply become busy with work, family responsibilities, or other challenges. Today, RSU 19 Adult Education in Newport offers a welcoming place where adults can return to school and complete their education.
Family members often play an important role in encouraging someone to take that first step. Parents, grandparents, spouses, and friends are often the ones who say, “You should go back and finish your diploma.” Adult Education staff say that simple conversation can make all the difference.
Some students return to earn their high school diploma, while others choose to prepare for the HiSET exam, which is Maine’s high school equivalency test. Many people are still familiar with the term GED, and although the test is now called the HiSET, it serves the same purpose – providing adults with the equivalent of a high school diploma.
Completing a diploma or HiSET can open doors to better job opportunities, college programs, workforce training, and personal goals that may have once seemed out of reach. Many students also say they want to finish school as a way to set a positive example for their children and grandchildren.
“Sometimes people think it’s too late to go back to school,” said Suzanne Nowinski, Director of RSU 19 Adult Education. “But every year we see students take that step, complete their diploma or HiSET, and move forward toward new opportunities.”
Often, it is a parent, grandparent, spouse, or friend who first encourages someone to return to school. A simple conversation can help someone realize that finishing their education is still possible.
Adults interested in learning more about earning their diploma or preparing for the HiSET (formerly known as the GED) are encouraged to contact the Adult Education office.
Call RSU 19 Adult Education at 207-368-3290 to get started.
The program is offered through RSU 19 Adult Education in Newport, serving adults throughout the region who are ready to take the next step in their education.
