WOW! We can’t believe what a great class we had last Sunday for Sea Kayak Skills: Navigating the Working Waterfront. Six students joined us on this beautiful fall day to learn the safety skills and etiquette for kayaking in working waters.
We’re grateful for top-tier instruction and hosting from Osprey’s Echo Sea Kayaking and super helpful insights from our guest speaker, fisherman and boat builder Dwight Staples.
This class benefited from a unique learning environment and addressed a key aspect of our area’s recreational kayaking: sharing the archipelago with commercial vessels.

At DIACE, we’re all about creative community learning! Island Fellow and DIACE marketing support Grace loved this great example at the Causeway Beach. Some of our other favorites include Island Heritage Trust‘s incredible signage and exhibits like Deer Isle Granite Museum‘s latest display or the Discovery Wharf at Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries.

What a fantastic first week of the fall semester! We wanted to re-introduce ourselves now that you’ll be seeing more of our faces, so we headed down to The Stonington Farmers’ Market in our backyard to find a photographer. Thanks to Healthy Island Project Director RenĂ© and her new pup, Sylvie, for this great staff photo!
Just another serendipitous island meeting. Did you know we’ve been offering tech support at HIP Senior Coffee Hours on behalf of the Island Connectivity Hub?
Without further ado, we’ve got on staff:
Morgan Witham, Director and Teacher/Advisor
Eric Beachy, Industrial Arts Instructor
Grace Upham (new this year!), Island Institute Fellow and Marketing/Community Programming Support
Unfortunately, Sylvie isn’t a coworker, but we are a dog-friendly space!

9/9 is Adult Ed’s first day of school! And hey, we’re in the paper! Check out this ad we printed in the Penobscot Bay Press. We love PBP, a great community learning resource.

Want to take a class? It’s not too late to sign up. We have two that start today: Living with ADHD and Floating Shelves Shop Topic: deerisle.maineadulted.org

Meanwhile, Morgan and Grace were both excited to see the front page news story about Island Institute’s new Climate of Change film. Grace is currently the Deer Isle-Stonington Island Institute Fellow and, fun fact, Morgan was the first Fellow on Isle au Haut!

When I (Grace) asked Morgan to pose enthusiastically for this announcement, she immediately jumped up and turned on her beloved Promethean Board to model some math. She can’t wait to welcome new and returning HiSET (high school completion) and diploma students for friendly math instruction and more. She also provides College and Career Counselling.

We’ve also got industrial arts (shop) classes, including specific subjects and open sessions for tools and support with DIY projects, a Living with ADHD Class, multi-media First Friday Art Classes, financial planning webinars, and much more in the works.
