Introduction to Wood Carving: Chopsticks

Gain a comprehensive overview of woodcarving knives and learn how to use them. Practice using metal and stone knives to carve some basic eating implements from wood: fine chopsticks and/or a jam spreader. Next, try to make a spinning top! Based on a historic binding, my Modern Coptic was designed for todays materials. To create this complex book, we will learn to back fabrics, cover book boards, cut down text blocks, shape concertinas, punch sewing stations, sew the unique linked stitched pattern & glue the finishing touches. Raku Firing

In this two-part workshop, you’ll explore the dramatic and hands-on process of raku firing. In Part 1, you’ll sculpt a piece in clay and watch a live raku firing demo. Three weeks later in Part 2, you’ll glaze and fire your own work using the raku method—removing red-hot pieces from the kiln and placing them into combustibles for stunning, unpredictable results. No experience necessary. All tools and materials provided. $20 materials fee payable to the instructor. This class is 2 sessions. Painting In The Wild

This year, Ed Higgins’ plein air painting class is not media dependent. You may choose to work in oil, acrylics, watercolor, or pastel. Getting outside and painting from nature is our mission, choice of media is up to you and what you feel like working with on a particular day. We will meet at various scenic locations in and around the midcoast. The instructor will send the group an email with the meet up location prior to each class. In case of bad weather, we will meet at an indoor location. There is no set materials list. If you have any questions, contact the instructor directly at ed_higgins@icloud.com.

Ultimate Beginner Watercolor: Level 2

In Level 2 Ultimate Watercolor class, you will continue your watercolor journey by building on what you learned in Level 1. After a quick review of color mixing and texture techniques that were covered in Level 1, we'll jump right in to learn a few more advanced techniques to fill your knowledge toolbox. The illustrations you will receive are printed on watercolor paper and encourage you to utilize all the painting techniques you've learned so far, while giving you the confidence you need to apply paint to paper and learn about water and paint ratios. You'll leave this short, but sweet class with an expanded knowledge and plenty of practice painting in watercolor, plus you'll have more pages to work on after the class ends. All materials provided. *There is a $25 materials fee (payable to the instructor) for this class that covers paint, 16 watercolor sheets that include custom illustrations, experiment sheets and color charts that can be bound into a book, as well as use of Princeton Select Watercolor brushes.
