Are you a newish (or out of practice) knitter and ready to tackle your first sweater? Using my fool-proof classic pullover sweater pattern, you will learn basic sweater construction skills such as tweaking a pattern to achieve your perfect fit, knitting from the top-down, creating raglan sleeves, and final finishing techniques. Learn in a communal, stress-free and satisfying way! Some very basic knitting experience is required. Bring a sweater that fits you well to the first class. Students will purchase their own yarn and needles, so cost will vary. *No Class: 2/19.

Ed Higgins’ first sculpture class was so much fun, he’s running it again. This time we’ll boldly explore assemblage. Dimensional artwork built from found objects. You will plan and execute your own projects, collecting what you need along the way. Each class will end with a spotlight on an assemblage sculptor from the history of art. Attendance in one of Ed Higgins’ studio classes is recommended but not required. Open to artists of any experience level. There is no set materials list for this class. A good follow up to Ed’s animal anatomy class last spring. We’ll take a close look at birds and come up with processes that help us observe, capture and express their unique anatomy and essence. As with many of Ed Higgins’ sketching classes, we’ll begin with speed sketching warm ups, and then concentrate on independent study projects. Minimum materials required for the class are a sketchbook, pencil, and white vinyl eraser. Welcome in the holiday season with colorful window stars. Made from folded kite paper, these magical decorations are the perfect thing to illuminate your home or give away as gifts. Students will learn basic paper-folding techniques to make window stars ranging from beginner to advanced. Join us for this simple yet stunning craft! All materials included. Sign-up early as registration will close 2 weeks prior to each session date.

This class introduces the vocabulary of the book, the tools and materials needed for making beginner books. On the first evening we will hand decorate our papers, using different mark-making tools in calligraphic ways. The second night we will stitch two pamphlet books, binding them with soft and hard covers. Finally we will create pocket accordion books and begin to consider how to fill them. A materials fee of $20 payable to the instructor is due on the first night. Tools will also be provided.

This is an introductory hands-on class designed to learn the “ins and outs” of the Japanese running stitch technique called Sashiko. We’ll discuss the history of this beautiful and utilitarian stitching; types of fabrics, threads & needles; learn basic traditional patterns and how to transfer them, and use some of the tools that help make this a mindful and enjoyable pastime. We’ll create a small sampler of stitches and patterns, which can then be made into a potholder, a small quilt. Fabric, thread and tools are supplied, along with many handouts that will help you continue your journey long after class is over. *A materials fee of $25 is due to the instrcutor on the first night of class.

Capture your own bouquet with watercolor and ink! This all-levels class will explore techniques for illustrative ink drawing with ‘dip pens’, and layering and mixing vibrant and organic hues with watercolor. Students will leave with their own unique composition of a bouquet - which could make a wonderful handmade holiday gift. Students can either buy themselves the required materials - the materials list is linked here - or they can buy material kits from the Mix, an art store in Brunswick (here is a link to a student-grade kit, and here is a link to an artist-grade kit).  *THIS IS A ONE DAY WORKSHOP.

Ed Higgins’ popular charcoal class is back and better than ever, with new prizes awarded at the end of each class for the dirtiest hands! Charcoal is a fluid, forgiving, and beautiful medium, and should be part of every artist’s repertoire. We’ll warm up with speed sketching and then work on individual projects where the subject matter is up to you. The minimum materials list for this class is vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, charcoal pencils, and a large pad of newsprint. In this class, we will follow step by step instructions to create a unique explosion box! When the top is removed, the inside pops open and reveals pockets to tuck in a note or gift card, and colorful decorations. We will also make a mini gable box perfect for that small gift. Precut kits and envelopes are provided. Participants need a pair of scissors and colored pencils or markers.

Learn to draw what you see. If you can write you can draw! It is more a matter of learning to see and recognize shapes and proportions. We will spend three weeks rapidly improving our drawing and observation skills through a series of exercises and projects. In order to get the greatest benefit from the class, it is advised that you complete the short daily drawing challenge. Materials list will be provided by the instructor.
